TOP STYLIST ANNOUNCED

Monday, 8 October 2012 - 3:16pm

The Skills Institute recently held its third annual Top Stylist Competition for apprentice hairdressers.

This year’s theme was Forever Now and Then.

In preparation for the competition apprentices researched past Hollywood screen sirens, such as Marilyn Monroe, Bette Davis and Rita Hayworth.

Incorporating this knowledge and looking at modern day celebrities such as Katy Perry and Christina Aguilera, apprentices created hair styles by combining old style glamour with new.

Students organised their own model and were required to complete the hair style in two and half hours.

“Our apprentices really enjoyed the competition.  Not only does it allow them to show off their creative side, it enables them to be up-to-date and current with the latest trends,” Skills Institute hairdressing teacher Leanne Colgrave said.

“At this time of year there are lots of charity balls, school formals and weddings.  This competition relates directly to what our apprentices are doing in industry.  It helps them achieve the styles their clients want to wear.

“Each year the apprentices produce some amazing work, this year was no exception,” said Ms Colgrave.

This year’s Top Stylist award went to Alicia Faulkner of Kaizen Hair.  Alicia thought the day was exciting and fun, whilst being very nerve wracking!

“The event was well organised and I think it has helped me realise just how far I have come during the past 8 months,” she said.

The competition was judged by industry representatives, with some wonderful prizes donated for the Top Stylist.

Results were:

Alicia Faulkner – Kaizen Hair

Awarded – ‘Top Stylist’

Rebecca Maidment – Yaeger For Hair

Awarded – 1st Runner up

Callie Harris – The Terrace Hairdressing
