CENTRE FOR HERITAGE

Monday, 5 December 2011 - 3:01pm

An initiative of the Southern Midlands Council, the Oatlands Centre for Heritage (CFH) focuses on the restoration and conservation of heritage buildings and assets for viable use and re-use within sound conservation principles and frameworks.

In partnership with the CFH, The Skills Institute has proposed an extension to the range of courses it offers to include a number of units that directly relate to the CFH.

Proposed courses would include:

• lead paint mitigation
• asbestos awareness
• decorative and solid plastering
• heritage roofing
• matching paint colour
• stains and timber finishes
• graining and marbling
• wallpaper.

TSI spokesman Owen Smith said the unit leaders were very enthusiastic about the possibility of teaching the new units to an interested group of students.

Mr Smith also said that several TSI employees had expressed an interest in studying the Burra Charter - a federal document that outlines the basic procedures and principles to be followed in the conservation and preservation of important Australian heritage sites.
