Monday, 17 October 2011 - 4:14pm

Skills Institute third-year Motor Body apprentice James Newton, from Mornington, represented Tasmania at the weekend at the national PPG Paint Matching competition in Sydney.

James, who is employed by the TACC and hosted by Wells Body Works, won the statewide competition in Devonport recently.

He placed third at the national titles at the weekend.

The competition involves the participants being given two paint colour samples, and allocated tinters to recreate the exact colour. They have one hour per colour to match the tint. They are judged against criteria including efficiency, OH&S and cleanliness.

James won a perpetual shield and a new spray gun for winning the Tasmanian title, which had nine competitors and has been running since 1992.
